Orthopaedic Treatment, Braces in Liverpool

Orthopaedic treatment involves techniques like expanding the bone structures, creating new bone, and reducing the risk of crowded teeth in the future. Instead of extracting teeth that don’t fit into place, we accommodate for their spacing needs and then fine-tune their alignment with braces at a later stage of development.

When to Plan a Consultation for Your Child

Ages 7-9 are the best time to bring your child in for an orthopaedic consultation. This stage in their oral development is ideal, as it allows us to spot potential concerns, intercept developmental issues with braces or fixed appliances and minimise the risk of extractions when your child gets older and needs braces. By modifying their growth patterns, we can enlarge the roof of the mouth or their jaw to better accommodate for proper tooth eruption.

The biggest mistake most people make is waiting until their child is 16 to 17 years old before they consult with a dentist about their bite alignment. The earlier treatment is best when it comes to avoiding issues with your child’s growth patterns.

Early Intervention Treatments

In addition to traditional braces, appliances such as palatal expanders can be used to encourage adequate bone growth and spacing. Because the bones in young children’s mouths are more flexible at this age, we can use gentle forces to adjust their growth patterns. This early intervention sets their smile up for better success as they get older and can improve the success of traditional braces in the future.

While tooth movement and correction can be performed at any age, the most effective results come from treatments targeted during a child’s early stages of oral development while their bones are still growing.

What to Expect at a Consultation

During an orthopaedic treatment consultation, we’ll take a series of photographs, scans and X-rays to analyse you or your child’s oral anatomy. We also run special software to analyse bone structures. About two weeks later, we’ll have a treatment plan to review with you and discuss your possible options.
